Veneers are laminates are a type of cosmetic procedure that dentists use to cover up unsightly teeth. There are two types of veneers but most often porcelain veneers are the preferred type. Laminates are used to improve the look of teeth that are stained, uneven, worn, or have chips. The newest types allow the consumer to experience beautiful, natural teeth while maintaining their original teeth.
Veneers are custom designed, thin slips made out of porcelain material. The slips are placed and bonded to the front of the tooth, creating a false enamel. The porcelain is meant to be tooth-like in appearance and texture. The caps are designed to fit each individuals needs and then placed over the existing tooth.
Though porcelain on it’s own tends to be extremely fragile, when it is backed up by a tooth it becomes extremely durable. Veneers require little or no work on the existing tooth. They are quick and easy. Often veneers can be used instead of caps to protect a chipped or slightly damaged tooth, considering the fact that they are less invasive and more realistic in appearance this is something to consider.
Some people falsely believe that if they have unattractive teeth they will be better off pulling them out and replacing them with a partial or plate. This is not the best option when problems are simply cosmetic. For several rotten or severely damaged teeth, then a plate may be the preferred method. However, for simply unsightly teeth, veneers are almost always a better option.
There are several benefits to porcelain veneers over other forms of cosmetic dentistry. One benefit is the fact that they provide an extremely life like appearance. Porcelain absorbs and reflects light very much like human enamel. For this reason, laminates often make the teeth appear very realistic and attractive. This is what makes it so difficult to differentiate a veneer from a natural tooth.
Another benefit of the veneer is that it resists staining. Human enamel stains very easily, which is what causes the yellowing of teeth in coffee and soda drinkers, smokers, or the elderly. Though porcelain laminates look an awful lot like enamel and behave a lot like enamel they do not stain as easily.
Of course, there are downsides to laminate bonding. The cost can be rather high for some people. Another downside to the veneer is that you may have to make a few life changes in order to ensure the longevity of your laminates. People who grind their teeth will need to sleep with a night guard to prevent destruction over time to the laminates. Also some foods such as raw carrots are better off avoided.
In general veneers greatly improve the look of teeth. Over recent years the method of creating and adhering laminates has improved greatly. Dentists are now able to routinely offer the appearance of beautiful, true-to-life enamel for those who previously despised the appearance of their teeth. A good smile is a great investment in your future and your self-esteem. All of this should be considered when deciding whether or not veneers are the right path for you.
